Start your copper search in the rocky ravine near the damaged bridge between Horizon and the Woods. Fan mining guides identify Copper Boulder deposits toward the frozen creek bed. Bring a Flint Pickaxe: a Stone Pickaxe can find the rock but cannot mine it. These are landmark directions from community guides, not verified coordinates or a guarantee that every deposit is present in your save.

First copper route: Horizon to the Woods
- Make a Stone Pickaxe, gather flint, then craft a Flint Pickaxe at the Workbench.
- Find the damaged bridge between Horizon and the Woods using the map guide.
- Search the rocky ravine toward the frozen creek bed for deposits labelled Copper Boulder.
- Mine copper, then return to your shelter before the cold forces a longer detour.
Community guides also report copper in the canyons toward the Solar Fields and around Landscar Cave. Start with the nearer bridge route if you are still building your first equipment. This page does not provide an interactive overlay; the map guide links to the external community map.
Why a copper deposit will not break
A crossed-out mining icon usually points to the tool tier. Equip the Flint Pickaxe rather than the Stone Pickaxe and check the deposit label before striking. If the tool is damaged, return to your repair station; do not assume an unbreakable boulder is a missing quest unlock.
- Stone Pickaxe: stone and flint.
- Flint Pickaxe: copper, coal and sulfur.
- Copper or Scrap Pickaxe: the next step toward iron, according to fan mining data.
Copper ore versus Copper Ingots
The Tailoring Bench and Wire recipes use processed copper rather than raw ore. Community recipe data lists 3 Copper and 5 Coal for a Copper Ingot at the Stone Furnace. Confirm the displayed recipe in your installed build before committing a large batch.
Follow the Tailoring Bench guide for the quest and construction requirements. If you need copper for the radio, reserve ingots for Wire before spending everything on a new station. The resources overview puts copper into the full smelting chain.
Plan the return trip before you mine
- Leave inventory space for ore and fuel rather than collecting every piece of junk on the way.
- Bring warmth supplies and food; a mineral deposit is not a shelter.
- Use visible landmarks as well as custom markers: the developer known-issues post says markers can disappear after restarting.
- Keep copper ore and ingots in separate storage stacks so recipe shortages are easy to diagnose.
