The short answer

Community mining guides point to Bone Cave between Horizon and the Woods, plus rocky slopes in the Woods, for early flint. Use a Stone Pickaxe on a mineable flint deposit. The cave is associated with the early dog-rescue story, so it is a useful landmark rather than a precise coordinate. Reserve your first flint for the next pickaxe before using the rest on repairs or construction.

Where to look for early flint

Start with the Bone Cave route from the early story, then inspect rocky terrain in the Woods. Check the map guide to orient yourself between Horizon and the Woods. These locations come from community mining guides and can differ with progression or game updates.

Do not treat every rock as flint. Move close enough to read the deposit name and check whether your equipped tool can mine it. The cave has a bear encounter, so review the enemy guide before entering with little health or food.

A short flint gathering checklist

  1. Equip a Stone Pickaxe and check its condition.
  2. Pack food and warmth supplies for a return trip, not just the walk out.
  3. Search Bone Cave or the rocky Woods slopes for flint deposits.
  4. Return to the Workbench and inspect the Flint Pickaxe recipe.
  5. Keep extra flint in storage for repairs and later construction.

What to make with your first flint

Fan recipe data lists 2 Flint and 4 Wood for the Flint Pickaxe at the Workbench. That upgrade lets you mine copper, coal and sulfur, so it is the immediate progression goal. Check the recipe shown by your current build; community quantities are useful planning estimates rather than official fixed values.

The Repair Bench is another flint expense, listed at 10 Flint and 10 Wood in community data. Build it when your tool upkeep justifies the cost, but avoid spending your entire first haul before making the mining upgrade. The crafting guide explains the larger station and tool sequence.

After flint: the copper run

Use your new tool for the copper route near the damaged bridge. Coal becomes important once you start converting ore into ingots. The resources guide covers the materials that follow flint.

  • If the deposit refuses to break, inspect its name and your tool tier.
  • Do not rely only on custom map pins; disappearing markers are an acknowledged developer issue.
  • Carry only the materials you need for the next crafting goal so the journey stays short.
