You do not need to collect water in Permafrost, because the game has no thirst meter. The survival stats are Body Warmth, Health, Hunger, Energy and Stamina, and drinking counts toward the Hunger bar. That means you never have to find, melt or boil water to avoid dying of thirst. Drinks still matter, though, because tea and coffee restore warmth, energy and health.

There is no thirst meter
The in-game hint tells you to use the bottom-left icons to track Body Warmth, Health, Hunger, Energy and Stamina. That list has no thirst or water stat. Every reviewer and streamer who played the October 2026 builds described the same five meters.
One streamer summed it up while looking at a drink in the first episode: hunger and thirst are essentially one combined bar. A fan datamine of the preview build found 31 status effects, and none of them is thirst or dehydration. The same data lists food and drink values for hunger, energy, health and warmth, but not for water.
Official messaging points the same way. The publisher describes the threats as extreme weather, hunger and exhaustion. Thirst never appears in the official list of core survival mechanics.
Why Permafrost skips thirst
Many survival games ask you to find and purify water, so it is natural to expect the same here. Permafrost puts its pressure on the cold instead. The official Steam post on core survival mechanics lists body temperature, scavenging, shelter, the dog, weapons, exploration and co-op, and water is not among them.
Players noticed the shift during the playtest. One streamer called it a survival-light approach that focuses on weather rather than constantly running out of food and drink. The constant tension comes from Body Warmth and the fear of being caught outside at night.
Coverage of the game reflects this focus. An 80.lv feature describes the usual survival-game hustle of finding grub and water, but for Permafrost itself it highlights wood, upcycled materials, shelters and food supplies. Cold zones, not dry spells, are what test your preparation.
The five meters you actually manage
Since water is off the list, it helps to know what each of the five meters does. A reviewer who played the full Early Access build called Body Warmth the most important value to watch. The others are simpler, but each one can still kill you if ignored.
- Body Warmth — drops when the area is colder than you; at zero you get Hypothermia.
- Health — suffers from illness, untreated wounds, bleeding and Parasites.
- Hunger — filled by food and drinks; this is where drinking counts.
- Energy — affects endurance and is restored by resting or sleeping in a bed.
- Stamina — used for running and fighting, and recovers on its own.
Clothing affects how much cold you can tolerate, while fires and shelters give you places to warm up. Your bed also lets you rest when the weather gets too bad. In practice, most of your attention goes to warmth, food and rest.
How the Hunger bar works
Because drinks feed into Hunger, this one bar covers both eating and drinking. It drops in stages that appear as status effects: A Bit Hungry, then Famished, then Starving. Each stage is a clear signal to eat before your health starts to suffer.
Food fills the bar far better than drinks do. Cooked dishes restore much more hunger than raw food, and drinks like soda only give a small boost. Think of drinks as a bonus for warmth and energy, and food as your real source of hunger.
Drinks that still matter
Even without thirst, drinks are useful items. They restore other meters, and some raise Body Warmth, which makes them valuable on cold trips. The preview build data lists these main options.
| Drink | How you get it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Improvised Tea | Hand-crafted from Herbs | Restores health and warmth |
| Improvised Coffee | Hand-crafted from Coffee Beans | Restores energy and warmth |
| Energy Drink | Looted | Restores energy |
| Can of Soda, Juice | Looted | Small hunger boost |
The Survivor starting background begins with Improvised Tea, and the Hunter starts with Improvised Coffee. Both drinks are worth crafting in bulk once you have herbs and beans. Keep a few in your pack for emergencies away from a fire.
Alcohol is not a warm drink
Vodka, moonshine, beer and whiskey can be found in the world. They add a little warmth, but they also apply the Drunk status. The game describes Drunk as something that disrupts temperature regulation, which is the last thing you want in the cold.
Alcohol does have a real use. It can cure Parasites and treat infected wounds, which makes it a medical item rather than a drink. Save it for those cases and use tea or coffee to warm up.
Water items that do exist
A few items with water in their name do appear in the game. They are not drinking water, so do not confuse them with a thirst system. Here is what they do.
- Hot Water Bottle — a wearable warmth item with durability, not a drink.
- Farming Water Tank — part of indoor farming; it keeps planters watered.
- Rivers and frozen lakes — scenery only; you cannot drink from them.
Growing herbs and coffee
Since tea and coffee are your best drinks, a steady supply of herbs and coffee beans pays off. Indoor farming lets you grow both in planters under grow lights. The preview data lists ten farming structures, including planters, a farming station and the water tank mentioned above.
Farming is a later-game system, so early on you will rely on looted herbs and beans. Search houses and containers as you explore, and let your dog sniff out loot. Once your base is stable, a small indoor garden keeps your drink supply going.
This is the one place where water plays a role. In the preview data, coffee and herb plants each have a water use rate, which is why the Farming Water Tank exists. It keeps your planters going, but it never refills a thirst meter, because there isn't one.
What to focus on instead
With no thirst to manage, your priorities are warmth and food. Keep a heat source and shelter close, and wear the best clothing you can make. The stay warm guide covers this in detail.
Food fills the Hunger bar that drinks also feed into. Hunting and cooking meat is the main source, and cooked dishes restore far more than raw food. See where to find food for hunting grounds and recipes.
Nothing in the official Early Access roadmap mentions a thirst system. The four announced updates cover combat animations, map content, weapon parts, the sledgehammer and the White Hell biome. For now, water is simply not something you have to worry about.
