The short answer

The Tailoring Bench is the station that makes every set of clothing in Permafrost. Skinwalker gives you its blueprint at Hunter's Glade in the Woods, through a quest reward box during The Way Home. It costs 15 Wood and 3 Copper Ingots, so you must smelt copper ore at a Stone Furnace first. Pair it with a Tanning Rack, which turns pelts into Treated Hide and Cloth for your recipes.

Why the Tailoring Bench matters

Clothing is one of the main defences against the cold in Permafrost. Insulated outfits slow the loss of Body Warmth when you leave the fire. The Tailoring Bench is where all of that clothing is made.

A fan database lists 63 recipes on this bench, from Casual clothes to the Lunar set. That makes it one of the two busiest stations in the game, next to the Workbench. Most players build it in their first few hours after Horizon.

Better clothes also unlock later regions. The cold gets harsher as you move toward the Solar Fields and White Hell. Our stay warm guide explains how clothing works with fire and shelter.

How to unlock the Tailoring Bench

You get the recipe from Skinwalker, the lone hunter who lives in the tower at Hunter's Glade. During the quest The Way Home, open the Quest Reward box there. It gives you the Tailoring Bench recipe and a Utility Backpack with 25 slots.

Some guides tie the unlock to the House into a Home quest instead, and one lists a quest called High Frequency. Quest names shifted between test builds, so the trigger may differ slightly in your version. If the recipe is missing, follow the main quest to Hunter's Glade and check the reward box.

Fan data also lists a cost of 2 blueprint points to learn the recipe. Keep a couple of points spare when you head for the Woods. The crafting guide explains how blueprint points work.

What you need to build it

The bench costs 15 Wood and 3 Copper Ingots. Raw copper ore does not count, which is the most common reason players get stuck. You have to smelt the ore first.

  1. Craft a Flint Pickaxe at the Workbench so you can mine copper.
  2. Mine at least 9 Copper from copper boulders near the bridge between the Woods and Horizon.
  3. Build a Stone Furnace for 40 Stone.
  4. Smelt 3 Copper and 5 Coal into each Copper Ingot.
  5. Place the bench on a foundation in your base and add the wood.

Three ingots need 9 copper and 15 coal in fan data. Burn 5 Wood into 2 Coal at the furnace if you have no coal nodes nearby. The resources guide shows where to find copper and coal.

The Tanning Rack comes first

Most clothing recipes need Cloth or Treated Hide. Both come from the Tanning Rack, which costs 15 Wood and 3 Deer Pelts in fan data. Hunt a few deer in the Woods before you build it.

The rack turns any pelt plus 2 Animal Fat into Treated Hide. It also turns 1 Treated Hide into 3 Cloth. That means every outfit starts with a successful hunt, so read where to find food for the best hunting grounds.

Clothing sets and what they cost

Each set has boots, gloves, a hat or helmet, a jacket and pants. The jacket and pants cost the most and give the most cover. Fan data lists these sets on the bench.

SetMain materialsStage
CasualCloth, RopeEarliest, cheap
TribalCloth, Treated HideHouse Camp quest set
HybridCloth, Treated HideEarly to mid game
Moon CultCloth, Bones, Treated HideMid game
Scavenger and RenegadeCloth, Copper IngotsMid game
Insulated MountainCloth, Processed PlasticCold Zone runs
MilitaryCloth, Quality MetalLate game
LunarCloth, Moonrock Ingots, Quality MetalWhite Hell

The story asks for the Tribal set during the House Camp stage. Walkthroughs note that building the bench alone does not finish the objective, so keep crafting until the journal updates. Later, Dressed for White Hell asks for armoured pieces from the Lunar line.

Hats made from animal heads exist too. The Bear Head Hat needs two Bear Pelts and the Fox Head Hat needs four Fox Pelts. They are a fun reward for a successful hunt, and the bear fight is covered in our enemies guide.

Casual clothes need only Cloth and Rope, which makes them the fastest way to cover bare slots. They are a stopgap rather than a real answer to the cold. Replace them with Hybrid or Tribal pieces as soon as you have Treated Hide.

Which set to craft first

Start with whatever the quest asks for, because that also moves the story along. After that, pick Hybrid pieces for a cheap upgrade made from hunting materials. A full jacket and pants make the biggest difference outdoors.

Before long trips into Cold Zones, consider the Insulated Mountain set. It needs Processed Plastic, so collect plastic junk while you scavenge. Fan data does not show final warmth numbers, so compare the item cards in your own game.

Save Quality Metal for the Military and Lunar sets once you can spare it. Those are the sets the late game is built around. Our Quality Metal guide explains how to make enough.

Tailoring tips

A few habits make clothing much less of a grind. They come from fan guides and player reports from the Early Access launch. Use them in solo and co-op alike.

  • Build the Tanning Rack next to the bench so materials flow in one spot.
  • Keep every pelt, because even small ones become Cloth.
  • Craft the jacket first, since it covers the most of your body.
  • In co-op, let one player hunt while another runs the bench.
  • Repair or replace worn pieces before a long trip; see the beginner guide.

Recipe numbers on this page come from fan databases of the Early Access build. The developers plan crafting and quality-of-life changes in Update 1, so some costs may shift. We will keep this page in step with the patch notes.

Tailoring in co-op

In a co-op world, each player has to craft or receive their own clothes. Blueprint unlocks can be split, so one player can own the Tailoring Bench recipe for the group. Agree on who spends blueprint points on it to avoid waste.

Shared hunting trips make clothing much faster. One player can drive animals while another takes the shots, then everyone carries pelts home. Our co-op guide covers how loot and recipes are shared.

Stock the Tanning Rack between sessions so the group can craft when everyone is online. A chest of Cloth and Treated Hide next to the bench saves a lot of walking. The host should save before anyone logs off.
