The short answer

Permafrost has no official mod support yet. The Steam store page lists no Steam Workshop, and the developers have not announced a mod kit for Early Access. A Permafrost page on Nexus Mods hosts a small number of fan files, but they are unofficial and can break after any patch. For now, the safest way to change the game is the Custom world setting, plus a few launch options and graphics settings.

Is there official mod support?

Not at the moment. The Steam store page lists Single-player, Online Co-op, Achievements, Trading Cards, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing, but no Steam Workshop. The Early Access FAQ talks about biomes, quests, NPCs, enemies, equipment and vehicles, with no mention of mod tools.

We also found no developer statement about modding in the official news posts from launch week. Those posts focus on crash fixes, co-op and quest blockers. Third-party guides agree that no mod kit or Workshop integration exists yet.

That could change later. The developers plan to stay in Early Access for at least 12 months and say Discord is their main channel for feature requests. If you want mod support, that is the place to ask for it.

Permafrost on Nexus Mods

Nexus Mods has a game page for Permafrost with only a handful of uploads so far. Fan mods for brand-new games usually start with small tweaks such as config edits, stack sizes or interface changes. Read each description carefully to make sure it targets SpaceRocket's 2026 game and the current build.

Several patches have already landed in the first days of Early Access. Each one can change files that a mod relies on, which may cause crashes or silently undo the mod. Check the upload date against the latest patch before you install anything.

Only download from well-known sites, and avoid tools that ask for admin rights or bundle trainers. A crash after installing a mod also makes your bug reports less useful to the developers. Remove mods before you report a problem.

Risks for saves and co-op

Back up your saves before you try any mod. Steam Cloud syncs your progress, so a broken save can overwrite the good copy on other machines. Our save guide explains how saving and autosave work.

  • Co-op — every player usually needs the same files, and a mismatch can block joining.
  • Patches — updates can break mods without warning.
  • Achievements — some changes may stop achievements from counting.
  • Support — the developers cannot help with modded crashes.

If you host co-op, agree with your group before changing anything. The launch-week update already reworked the friends server list and fixed join crashes. Keeping everyone on the vanilla game makes those fixes easier to test.

The official alternative: Custom settings

The closest thing to a built-in mod menu is the Custom world setting. It sits next to Story and Survival when you create a world and lets the host adjust individual values. It was switched off temporarily during the October playtest, so check what your build offers.

Hunger, rest and damageStory mode or Custom values
Overall difficultyStory, Survival or Custom
Key bindingsSettings menu; movement keys can now be rebound
PerformanceGraphics settings and the -dx11 launch option
Inventory pressureBring your dog to carry extra loot

These changes are safe for saves and co-op, and they survive patches. Story mode eases hunger, rest and damage so you can focus on exploring. That covers most of what early quality-of-life mods try to do.

Safe performance tweaks

Many players search for mods to fix stutter or crashes. The official preview advice was to add -dx11 as a Steam launch option, which led to fewer GPU crashes. Launch-week hotfixes also turned off FSR on RTX 20 to 50 series cards to improve stability.

Start with the in-game settings before editing any files. Lower shadows and view distance, try DLSS or FSR where available, and cap your frame rate. Our best settings guide lists the full set of tweaks.

If you still want to try a mod

Some players will experiment anyway, and that is your call on a single-player save. Follow a few simple habits to keep the risk low. Most problems come from skipping the backup or forgetting to remove a mod after a patch.

  1. Copy your save folder and keep it somewhere outside Steam Cloud.
  2. Read the mod page for the game version it was made for.
  3. Install one mod at a time and test it in a fresh world first.
  4. Keep a note of every file you changed or added.
  5. Remove all mods after each official patch, then reinstall only updated ones.
  6. Use Verify integrity of game files in Steam to return to vanilla.

Steam's file check restores any changed game files in a few minutes. It is the quickest fix when the game will not start after a mod. If crashes continue on a clean install, follow the official crash advice instead.

What players are asking modders for

The early wish list mirrors the complaints in reviews. Players want more control over sleep, because sleeping always wakes you the next morning. Others want bigger stack sizes, since inventory space runs out quickly on long trips.

Some requests are already on the official roadmap. Update 1 promises crafting, building and inventory quality-of-life changes, and Update 2 adds weapon parts to crafting. Waiting a few weeks may give you the change without touching a single file.

Other ideas, such as letting the dog inside during storms or climbing like in Cairn, are design changes. Those are worth posting on the official Discord or Steam forum. Feedback there shapes what the team builds next.

Looking for a different Permafrost mod?

Permafrost is also the name of popular mods for other games. If you came here for one of those, the list below should point you the right way. None of them are related to SpaceRocket's survival game.

Search the Steam Workshop or Nexus Mods page for that specific game to find them. Many of these mods have been around for years and have their own update histories. Always check that a mod supports your game version.

Will Permafrost get mod support?

Nothing is promised, but the signals are worth watching. The roadmap focuses on combat polish, map content, weapon parts, a sledgehammer and the White Hell biome. Mod tools usually arrive late in development, if at all, once the core systems settle.

Steam Workshop support would be the clearest sign, because it shows up on the store page. We will update this guide as soon as the developers say anything official. Until then, explore the vanilla game with our gameplay overview and crafting guide.
