The short answer

The official Permafrost roadmap lists four Early Access updates: combat polish and a map content update, weapon parts in crafting, the sledgehammer, and the White Hell biome. None of them has a release date yet. Since the October 9 launch, the developers have shipped seven patches in eight days, focused on crashes, quest blockers, co-op invites and gamepad controls. Early Access is planned to last at least 12 months before 1.0.

The official Early Access roadmap

The developers posted the roadmap on October 7, two days before launch. It covers the first four updates and says there is more to come after them. No dates or seasons are attached to any update.

UpdateHeadlineAlso includes
Update 1Combat animation improvements, from melee to bowMap content update with chests, hidden treasures, recipes and items; crafting, building and inventory QoL; new firearms and clothing sets
Update 2Weapon parts in craftingMore firearms, more side quests and more story
Update 3The sledgehammer for demolishing obstaclesNew destructible objects and two new firearms
Update 4The White Hell biomeNew enemies, locations and story; four new firearms; a new torch type; QoL upgrades

Update 1 matters most for current players. Combat animations were one of the most common complaints in early reviews, and the map content update adds new things to find in regions you already know. Our review roundup covers what players criticised at launch.

Every patch since launch

The team patched the game almost daily in the first week. The table lists the official Steam announcements in order. Each patch downloads automatically through Steam, and restarting Steam forces the update if it does not appear.

DatePatchKey changes
Oct 9Hotfix 1 and Hotfix 2FSR disabled on NVIDIA RTX 20, 30, 40 and 50 series cards to cut crashes
Oct 10Crash Fixes & Co-op ImprovementsSeveral crash fixes, stair stutter fix, updated DLSS and FSR, better friends server list, easier-to-spot fast travel points
Oct 11Quest Fixes & Steam InvitesHopes and Dreams fix, replacement quest keys from Anna or Skinwalker, working Steam invites from the main menu
Oct 14Quest Fixes, Fewer Crashes & More Moon RockCheaper, faster coal; 5 to 7 Moon Rock per boulder; Disassembly Bench now uses Iron Ingots; new voiceovers
Oct 15Gamepad, Fast Travel & Quest FixesBlueprints on gamepad, moved fast travel points near the Warehouse and Crow's Nest, many text fixes
Oct 16Gamepad Improvements & Crash FixEquipment crash fix, crouch and sprint mode settings, saved key bindings, wounded bear state saved

On October 15 the developers also said they are working on bigger updates deep in the game's systems. They did not share details or dates. Those changes are meant to make future updates smoother and safer to roll out.

Patch changes that affect how you play

Most patches fix bugs, but a few change your resource plans. The October 14 update is the biggest one for crafting. It makes coal cheaper and Moon Rock more plentiful.

  • Coal — the Stone Furnace now makes 2 Coal from 3 Wood instead of 5, in 10 seconds instead of 15.
  • Moon Rock — boulders now give 5 to 7 Moon Rock instead of 2 to 4; see the Moonrock guide.
  • Disassembly Bench — now needs Iron Ingots instead of Iron Ore; see the Dismantle Bench guide.
  • Steam invites — work when the joining player is already in the main menu; see the co-op guide.
  • Fast travel — points are easier to spot, and two were moved so they no longer collide with objects; see the fast travel guide.

If a quest was stuck before a patch, load the save again after updating. The October 11 notes say saves with the glitched Hopes and Dreams recording may still be stuck, and a later patch lets you finish that step from the journal. The pinned Quest Issues and Workarounds post on Steam lists the remaining blockers.

How long Early Access will last

The Steam Early Access FAQ says the team does not know the exact length yet. They plan to stay in Early Access for at least 12 months, using that time for content, mechanics, quality of life and optimization. That puts the earliest realistic 1.0 window in late 2027.

The FAQ promises several new biomes, quests, NPCs, enemies, equipment and vehicles before 1.0. The core premise will stay the same. It also warns that the price is very likely to rise during Early Access, so our price guide is worth reading before you wait.

Console versions are tied to this timeline as well. A PlayStation Store page exists without a date, and the team has said consoles are more likely around 1.0 than during Early Access. Our PS5 guide tracks any change.

What is not on the roadmap yet

Several features players ask about have no confirmed date. Official dedicated server files have not been published, and crossplay between stores is still described as in development. Mod support has not been announced either.

The roadmap says there is more to uncover after Update 4. We will add each new announcement to this page when it appears on the official Steam news feed. Check back after each patch for the summary.

Where to follow updates

The official Steam news feed carries every patch note. The developers name their Discord as the main community hub, where they also take feedback and bug reports. The pinned Known Issues post on Steam lists current workarounds.

When a patch breaks something, report it on the Steam forums or Discord, as the developers ask in each post. Crash reports should include logs uploaded to the publisher's file hub. Our best settings guide covers the current performance fixes in the meantime.
